home depot has a unit that does about 35 gal. a day for 160 with a small tank is this good or will i need something deferent. i am haveing this huge problem with algae so bad that i vacum it out and do water change and grow in front of my eyes its like braking off and floating around my tank it looks like its starting to affect my fish. my tanks 5 mounth old. any help and encouragement would help

Well, there are tons of places on the internet to buy RO/DI units so I guess what I'd do is get the specs on the one at depot and compare it with what's out on the 'net.
Some questions though. How big is your tank? Have you tested the water coming out of the faucet to get an idea what the values are? Are you likely to need a prefilter (say you are on a well)?

i bought mine on ebay.."pure water club". never called to ask them anything, so i can't comment on customer service. they were about 50% cheaper than everyone else though, and it's working fine.

Customer service was great. It froze a few time this year and I forgot to get my unit out of the garage....one of the canisters shattered from ice inside. Called them up, and had new canisters and DI resin in two days.
Just do some research and figure out what you need....then get a unit that fits. Hope this all helps.

Thats exactly like the one I bought from PurelyH20. I am pleased with the dual TDS system. I find that my water is horrible here in TX and have to change the DI filter more often. It only last for about 150 gallons if I want DI water.

Competitive prices. Not really expensive like one or two other brands out there are. I had a thread about this at ReefKeeping.com full of tons of info but they're down right now. A guy who suggests one of those "expensive" brands was debating various points with a FilterGuys rep.
I think mine is 75G/day and I have a 90gal tank. I figured... about a 4:1 ratio for bad:good water. That's with good tap water. If you use well water this can go up to like 10:1 and you'll go through filters a lot quicker. After ONE accident already I decided I'm not running this thing unless i'm home to monitor it. And with evaporation and 10% month changes I need about 50 gal/month or so. Not much. So 36g/day is fine as long as you don't need any in a hurry and you already have some stored.
HOWEVER, you might find by the time you get other things that are more important like at least a 4-5 stage filter, TDS monitors, PSI valve, etc. you'l end up with something 75-100 g/day anyway. Problem with the one at HD is it's probably meant for drinking water so it's 2 or 3 stages at most. And a $160 for that isn't such a great deal.
I'm personally finding that even with RO/DI water and almost untracable amounts of impurities in my water it's STILL ENOUGH for algae to grow. It's such a PIA. Now I have to look into putting a refugium in.
My tap water is like TDS 50 ppm. I don't know what my well wate is but judging from other people in my area it's 500-1000 ppm. Hence the reason it'll take longer to make water, use more filters, etc. At 10:1 hypothetically that's a lot of water... for 50 g you make you'll have 500 to get rid of.
