(55g) second hand. II'm new to the saltwater aquarium hobby andt came with everything: 80lbs live rock, bakpak protein skimmer, 2 pumps, compact light and even with one maroon clown (i know it's not ideal to cycle the tank with the little guy in it, but I had no choice as he came with the tank. He seems to be doing well though.)

I've had the tank now for about a week and a half and in the meantime I've read Paletta's "The New Marine Aquarium" which suggests that apart from the skimmer and the live rock, additional filtration is optional. I want to have the quality of the water as good as possible though so do you guys have any recommendations for a cost effective external power filters - canister or hang-on or anything else?

Also, I can't connect my RODI unit to my tap, it won't fit. IT is the Kent Marine Hi-S Maxxima 60 GPD RO/DI System http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewItem~ ... M1433.html

I'm living in Manhattan at the moment. Any tips?

Thanks everyone

External power filter is optional, and it does not really make the water quality improve just by putting one on. They tends to trap debris, which should be remove periodically. If you have a sump, or when you see junk inside the bakpak's chamber, you can accomplish the same function by cleaning the sump/bakpak periodically. Save you money.

As to the RO, you may want to check out some of the adaptors for them. There are basically three types, and they have different pros and cons. I prefers the permantly mounted setup, FWIW. The three kinds are faucet adaptor for kitchen, garden hose adaptor for the large spigot in the yard, and saddle-valve (or the better version with adaptors that does not leak as likely) that is more permanent solution. HTH.
