I placed a 6lb live rock and 3 peppermint shrimp in my 55 gallon F0 tank 4 days ago. Today while setting up for water change I noticed tiny iridescent...lobster looking things coming up along the back of the tank from behind the new live rock. I have no idea what these are. Did I get some hitchikers ? Should I hold off on my water change, or try to suck the little guys up ?

Are they anything like what is pictured in this link?
Amphipods and copepods are very common and completely harmless. In my experience, they swarm in the tank very early when they are first added to the tank. Their populations decline and stabilize after about a month depending on predators and the availability of food.
A water change won't hurt them. What you do with them beyond that is completely up to you.

absolutely. people get all sorts of stuff good or bad. Look at the hitchhiker lists and see if you should keep it or not. I had bunch of seastars and tons of weird corals that were tiny.

I have to ask, do you fully understand why one uses something such as live rock? It's not only possible, but without quarantine (and even with q/t) it can almost be IMpossible to NOT bring something in with live rock. It's the nature of the beast, and for a lot of folks, it's one of the reasons to use live rock (some call 'em "goodies").
A warning to the wise -- this time it's mysids. Next time could be mantids.
thanks i do understand but I am a still rookie. Everyday im seeing new things develope in the tank which is exciting. I want to be have "right" info on what I am seeing and how to maintain a healthy tank. This site has been very useful so far. Are there any sites with good tank log spreadsheets ?
