29g.. will it boil??

Hey guys and gals I have a question..

I have a 29g running and I just remembered I got a 150w 10,000k mh fixture in the basement...

Will this light make my tank too hot???.. I can't buy a chller..

If I decide get rid of that light and buy a new one.. what would you guys recommend???

I like soft corals... will like anemone but I think the tank is too small for that.. so I can stick to soft corals...

My 29 has 250w de mh running but mine also has a sump. If you run topless and a fan you should be alright.

you should be fine. just take off your top if you get too hot .

Now.. 150w 10,000k's..... what can I keep under that??

Ricky,
The 10K is only a measurement of light color. It means your bulb puts out a "natural" sunlight spectrum which is good. A lot of us like 20k which is very blue, makes the invert colors pop.

So you can keep what ever your little heart desires under that 10k.

LOL.. I know.. I meant to ask.. what can I keep under 150w of light??..

sorry.. will 150w take care of anything??

pretty much. The 29 is deep, but the 150 will look good even at the bottom of the tank. Turn the light side ways so you get total spread of the light side to side. I had 150w mh over a 10g. It was awesome.


I think I should do that again one of these days.

If your really serious about keeping a nano and would like to learn about what to and what not to do. Then go here and read, read and read. All the threads are locked so you can't post in them, but you can pm and ask anyone about anything in their thread.

That was a good learning experience for me and I had a great time sharing what I learned with others. It's a shame the build off threads aren't a little more utilized.

One more question... I have 20lbs of live sand in my tank...

A guy is giving me about 30lbs free.. but it's not live.. does it matter??.. Won't the sand that I have seed the rest???

Yes and no. I have 20lb of sand in my 29. I wish I had used 1/4 of that amount. I like the bare bottom tanks better. Easier on maint.
But to answer your question, yes the old sand will seed the new sand as long as you add the new sand a little at a time.

There's huge debate on sand beds (like everything else) and I would suggest further research before you add more sand. You'll have to decide that for yourself.
