Sump ... GPH??

Ok.. 29g.. 20g sump... what return pump should I get??..

I was thinking the quiet one 1200.... someone said not too many gph is better

Opinions greatly appreciated!!

If it were me I would go no more that 10x the tank volume. Some where between 200 and 300 GPH should be just fine. My current tank runs about 7x tank volume per hour.

that pump will be way too small for you. don't forget you will lose alot of pressure from head loss. i used a 748 gph pump on our 30 gallon with a 10 gallon sump and it was not a bad choice. i also used it for flow, and had the return coming through a SQWD wavemaker and it was ok for softies and LPS, but not sps.
if you like quiet one pumps, i'd go with the 3000 :wink:

btw- there was no rushing water or turbulence in the sump at all with that 748 gallon pump.

You are correct sir.

Something like a mag7 for submerged or a panworld 40PX as a suggestion for external.

no good.
use the mag7 like wazzel said. it will be plenty slow after head loss.

With 4ft of lift and throwing in (guesstimating) some line losses a mag7 will yield about 350 gph.

Depends on what you are keeping. Just for fish and things like mushrooms you would be fine. For leathers and large polyp stonies you will need addition in tank water flow. IF it were me I would look to add 20-30x intank water flow for those. For SPS the sky is the limit as long as you are not hitting them with jets of water. I got over 50x in tank flow on my current set up and I need a bit more.

wow... Ok I'm thinking of getting a wavemaker with two outlets into the tank.. that should give me 300+ gph in changing directions... and Maybe and extra maxijet 900..

a tank that small and so much current.. how do the fish feel about that??

Are your fishes stressed out with the current??

Fish will be fine. I got a tunze 6200 (5200 gph) in a 150 gal tank and the fish play in the current. I also have 1000 gph from my return pump and inductors that take that 1000 gph to some where between 3000 and 5000 gph. Total I got between 8200 gph and 13200 gph (54 to 88 turns per hour) and I could use a little more.
