Hello, I have a 2 month old reef tank, 90g Tall, 12g Fug, 30g Sump,w/Skimmer. DT has 75 lbs LR and 4"DSB. My 5" Scribbled Rabbitfish has small, perfectly formed opaque circles showing up over the past week.... the first one I noticed at dusk and it was about .5mm located on his side. The next morning the area where the circle had been was showing brown specks. He had been flashing a bit for a week and I was planning to get neon cleaner gobies as soon as I could. Now I can see two more opaque faint circles (perfectly round, same size .5mm) on his bottom..... there are no more brown specks anywhere yet. From everything I have tried to read in the past week, it just doesn't match up with Black Ich, but I did come across a mention of zoanthid sting/burn. What I'm trying to figure out is whether to stress him out and do a series of FW dips or just wait and see. He is very normal in all other ways. I actually did order my neon cleaner gobies last Friday when we got home from a mini-vacation..... and they were fine on Saturday after acclimating, I saw them yesterday morning while cleaning the glass, but I think they are hiding now -- probably because I have the biggest Coral Banded Shrimp I have every seen, body alone is 3.5" long. She has been in the tank for 2 months now and has molted 5 times!!! Godzilla Shrimp! So if I need cleaners for my Rabbitfish, I would have to get rid of the Shrimp. My other occupants are the usual snails, brittle stars, spaghetti worms, a feather duster that has doubled in size in 2 months to 3" across, some zoanthids, and a Black Sailfin Blenny, and a Picture Dragonette. Any advice would be eagerly read...... Thanks!

First, start with your observations of the fish: Is it eating (well)? Does it show eagerness to eat?
You mentioned the flashing--do you note any abrasions either present before he scrapes his body, or afterward? Does it clamp its fins, or keep them extended as it might if being aggressive (but with no actual thing to aggress against)?

A F/W dip might not be the best thing to start with right off. Personally, I like to separate in QT and observe first.

When I saw the thread title I thought your rabbitfish was eating something into 'crop circle's. That, or it had finally been abducted.

Hi, yes my rabbitfish is eating very well, and acting very normal. The flashing seems as tho he's begging to be cleaned by the Blenny. No other signs of distress or illness or odd behavior. How big a QT should I use for an 8" fish?

Wholly carp, he's that big? Wow, um... I can't see putting a fish that size into anything smaller than 30gals, and I'd really prefer to see it in 50-60gals. as a minimum. However, do you think a cleaner shrimp might work, considering that thing's such a slab of meat? Smaller fish don't dig them so much, but larger fish can stand up to their attention. I do far prefer them to CB shrimp-monsters. Especially 'Zilla-Shrimps. Does sound tasty, though.... <hmmm>

Anyway, if it's begging someone to clean it, perhaps making those arrangements might work better. If you prefer to QT, then you can certainly use a good, large plastic bin or tub.

Thank you so much for the help. I'm going to talk to my LFS about buying back the Zilla-shrimp, and getting some cleaners shrimp instead. Have you ever heard of fish getting perfectly round circles from hovering too near zoanthids?

No, I haven't ever heard of that. You could also do a little searching on wetwebmedia.com. Bob amasses some amazing information.

Can you view the tank out night with a red night? I wonder if there's a big fluke or isopod doing damage. Long shot, but a possibility.
