Follow "Meschaefer"'s instruction. What I use was a small P/H and I connect a flex tube to the P/H's venturi(this is the part on the output tube of the P/H that suck IN air). The other end of the flex tube go into the U tube where the air is. I kept the P/H in my sump. When the overflow fill with air, I turn on the pump and it suck the air out. I drill, tap and installed a valve into the top of the overflow. The valve is closed during normal operation. I open the valve only to suck out the air when need. They now sells a new overflow that has a similar set up on their external overflow built in. Drs Foster and Smith sells it. It is called 'Rapids Pro Series Wet/Dry Filter Systems. Look it up on their website. This will give you an idea of what I did. I no longer use the external overflow box. My current tank is AGA Reef Ready tank. Less objects hanging on the tank. But my old system worked for years without any break of siphon, if maintain.
