Well my tank is barebottom and I'm curious to know how fellow reefers deal with lowering their nitrate levels. Currently I do water changes every week and siphon out any detritus at the bottom. But sometimes I would get lazy or go out of town and not able to do a water change and see my nitrate go way up.

I do have a 20 gal being used as a sump but currently using it to hold my protein skimmer and heater and powerhead.

having a large enough skimmer is important for a BB tank.
what your doing is correct. you need enough flow to keep the crap in suspension so it gets taken over the overflow then skimmed out before it can break down and become N03.
