getting a new tank so when i make the move i gotta make a new sump to fit the new skimmer. im going to transfer over the SSB for the display as i was suggested. but i want to add a DSB in my fuge. will the sand mess with me if i put it in, like go thought a cycle, i was thinking those bags of sand with water in them at the LFS?

Not a 100% sure what your asking...but I will give it a try anyway.


When you move the SSB your are going to get a cycle. Disturbing the sandbed screws with the bacteria, there is some die off, and you kick a lot of detrius into the water coloum. It should be short lived, and I have moved mature tanks a couple of times and have never really worried about it. It sorts itself out very quickly.

No need to use the bagged sand with the water in it for a remote sandbed. I actually can't think a good reason to ever use it. Many people will use playsand from home depot for a remote sand bed. It is not as pretty as a aragonite based sand, but then again it is not your display tak. Although some people worry about using a silca based sand in thier tank, I have never come across someone who has had a real (as opposed to hypothetical) problem with it.
