from my reading it looks like i can use my mag out of the water. says for inline use also. one reason i want to do this is to help keep some of the heat down. since i plan to re-plumb system this weekend was thinking of tank the pump out of my sump.

What's the question?

He wants to know if a Mag drive pump can be used externally to reduce heat in his tank. :)

The answer is no to being used externally.
The info below that I (ehmmm) acquired from the Marine Depot site even gives a description on the 'inline' use he asks about.

Main Features
The pump is a magnetically driven centrifugal water pump. It has no seals to wear and contains no oil. The pump can be used submerged or inline. Inline means connections are made directly to the pump inlet and outlet ports, which have 1" NPT threads. All electrical components are encapsulated in epoxy with no seals to wear or break. The energy used is approximately 1/2 of regular motor driven pumps.

When I did the upgrade on the 120, I removed the Mag Drive that I was using for circulation and went to a larger external pump...and I also just recently changed the skimmer on my cube and went with an external pump there too..oddly enought BOTH tanks are now running warmer than they had been with the Mag Drives in their sumps.

I constantly check my water temps and am now convinced that the increased heat the external pumps produce warms the water even more while passing through the pump than the Mag Drive does in your sump.

I'd wait it out, buy another fan to keep things cool til the winter comes and get a chiller, if you don't already have one, for next summer.

Just my 2 cents..:)

mag

ty kathy, i was seeing some of the externals and it showing the water temp, which i kinda figured was the temp the water would be leaving the pump at, and most of the are 80-90 degree's. which seem's odd. so i guess ill still with the mag for a little while

Rick,

Be careful on using the mags externally - I have never had good luck with them - if you take apart the head of the pump you'll see that there is a little rubber gasket that basically keeps the water "in" - I have found that they salt creep like crazy over time. I'd use a different pump if you're going external.

Good luck

Also a reminder with the mags to change the impeller screws from metal to plastic so they don't rust.

If you use the pump externally then the screws don't matter. They will not be in contact with water. FYI

ive had the same mag 9 in my sump for about 4 yrs and a mag 7 in the sump for 5yrs. never seen rust. but i must agree when a mag is in the sump it runs cooler then external.
