In my opinion, A drain and a sump with cheato and filter socks...Skimmer of course...Or were you looking for a different answer??

IMO, that is overkill. For a 29 I would use a simple hang on the back filter. Weekly water changes of 10% or more will do you just fine! If you really want to get fancy, perhaps a AquaC Remora, but even that is a bit much. IMO

IMO, that is overkill for a 29... IMO

Your probably right but I tend to match my sump and display also....I like the water volume..the closer to main tank size the sump is the more good bacteria you hold...That makes me feel good... Currently building a 20 gal sump for a 12 gal nano that will all be under my living room TV except the nano next to the TV.....Call me crazy but my display will have great filtration....

What would be the best method to filter a 29 gallon reef tank

Perhaps not the best but for the past 20 months my 29G used the following filtration setup.

50lbs live rock
corallife superskimmer 65
15 gallon sump with filter sock, no refuge.
fluval 205 for carbon 24/7
5 gallon water changes weekly.

Seems to keep everything happy and growing. Heres a picture from last week

You can get good quality live rock at usually a great price right here in the for sale forum or the vendors forums.

can i see a photo of your sump

The rock I purchased off a vendor on this site who was closing his store, I believe it was NYAqua and the owner was Sal. I was a total noob at that time, (and still am) and I went to his store an early sunday morning, told them what I needed and they selected all the rock. Every piece was covered with correline. Perhaps one part of my success is because of these rocks which were sitting in his store tanks for a number of years. They only charged me 3 dollars a pound. Thanks Sal if your still around :)

If you look at my sump setup, the skimmer is in the small chamber and the return pump is in the larger chamber. I did this because I was having approx 1 gallon evap/day and if I had the return pump in the small chamber I would have to top off everyday. The way it is set up currently, I can go away for a weekend and not worry.

The light is a metal halide PFO minipendant 250 watts double ended with a 14k phoenix bulb run on an electronic icecap balast in a switch box. I paid around 320 at premium aquatics. I know its a good amount of light for a small 29G. I originally had 195W of PC and the only coral which had trouble with the acclimation was a red mushroom which has faded to pink.

I also have a small 4 inch fan directly behind the light. The main cooling come from the 8 inch fan sitting on my sump. It is on the same timer as the Metal Halides and my tank stay a constant 78-80 degrees. I have central AC so the hotest my tank has ever gotten was 82.5 during a heat wave when it was 100+ outside.

Hope this helps
