Research the animals you plan to keep long before you go out to purchase them. This will tell you what the animals needs are, and from that you can then choose animals that you can provide for. Therefore assuring long healthy happy fish, which in turn will make your experience a much more pleasant one.
Please be kind to your fish, and incorporate a skimmer. Your fish will thank you. Live rock for filtration & hiding places, sand for substrate, marine aquarium salt of course, power heads would be nice, heaters, thermometer, refractometer, test kits, RO/DI, quality foods depending on the type of fish, and a regular aquarium light fixture for your viewing pleasure. Depending on the type of fish you will be keeping you may need a tightly fitting cover. Eels, wrasse come to mind since the eels are great escape artist, wrasse because of their jumping ability.
And please be patient, and allow your tank to cycle before adding any fish. Please do not use live fish to cycle your tank!!!

With my freshwater, I have a hang on the back filter (Whisper)and an airpump with airstones. I also have a heater.

Do I need the same things?

I am thinking of doing live rock too. What skimmer would you recommend for a 75G?

kinda same as fresh water setup. just with live rocks and a skimmer, power heads will work

The powerheads I can get cheap. They're only used to move the water around, right?

You say that I don't really need a skimmer. I have a 75G, which filter can you recommend? Thanks.

dont really need the skimmer. Powerheads and some good filters that you will clean on a regular basis. Basic light

whisper is fine, just get rip of the media and put a foam in there. and don't use the air pump. you need live rock because it's your filter. about 75 lbs will be fine. a skimmer is a must IMO, unless you want to do water change more often. it's better for the fish anyway. i am using corallife superskimmer for my 125. http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsU.../cl0/coralifesuperskimmerneedlewheel220gallon
the bigger the better. it will be great for your 75

Do Not use any kind of sponge, it will only hold nitrates. Unless of course you plan on rinsing it constantly.

When I first started in salt water I tried to use hang on filters, including the Brutes of the hang on "Supreme Super Aqua Kings". Even they didn't last long with the salt water, and these were filters that I had always used for my fresh water tanks. I use to raise cichlids namely Oscars. Therefore I would not recommend a hang on filter, but that is just my opinion.

On my old 75 fowlr, now a 120, I used the same skimmer I am now using on my 155 bow front (a mixed reef)- Turboflotor Multi 1000 with an Oceanrunner PH2400 pump. They run around $200, very easy to use. Virtually plug & play, and very versatile. You can hang it on the back of your tank, sump, or place it in the sump. You can pick them up for about $100 used.
If you'd like to see a pic of my turbo in action there may be one in my gallery.

On my 120 fowlr I am running a Red Sea Berlin also with an Oceanrunner PH2400 pump.

You can use air pumps in a salt water tank, but again that has it's own draw back - lots and lots of salt creep. I much prefer the power heads. And yes, they are used to move the water around.
