Actinics why???

Does having only actinics on serve a purpose or is it just to bring out the bioluminecense in corals??? Because i have started running my actinics from 2pm to 2am, while running my mh from only 7pm to 2am...I was wondering if it's really doing anything or am I just viewing "The Glow" in the early hours???

Actinic lighting peaks at certain wavelenths that enhance photosynthesis in certain zoozanthalle in corals that enhance color. But do what you like. It is used mainly for supplementation of the lighting (halide) that already hits those spectrums but just not at the same intensity that the actinic lighting would.

So does that mean that they are worth leaving on that 5 hrs before my 12ks kick in????

Individual uses are different based upon tank, lighting, corals and main lighting. Usually have them do a dusk dawn effect so it gives you dual benefit. 2 hours before and 2 hours after your halides is more than sufficient. I do 1 hour before and after.

Okay so actinics do nothing for growth just color....This does clarify a lot thanks...

So is a 12k bulb in the sense only suppose to eliminate actinics???
I have noticed slower growth under metal halids but better color than I was getting under Pc's granted, I had alot of pc's...65wx8 and 6 t5's over a 180 regular...

sorry bout that, chlorophyl absorbs light at this wavelength so this must promote growth..Being that around that wavelength photosynthesis occurs...
