Ok, so which heaters have you found to be prone to failure leading to stray voltage?

Wow, now you guys have got me worrying about my elcheapo glass heater I got 2 years ago used with my tank. It's the dial in temp type, but you have to dial it to 72 degrees to get 80 degrees. It works, but I've got bigger problems-the thermostat in my apartment gets stuck, one day I came home to a 90 degree apartment, all windows closed.

90 degree's ? keep the chiller on in the winter, that's what I do, just in case...

I don't run a chiller, really have no need. (except for days like that).

What do you have your ambient room temperature at? Do you run a sump? If yes, how many gallons? A separate fuge? If yes, how many gallons?

??? no i do not hava sump. i hav a wet/dry. my romma varys. most of the time 65 but sometimes i turn ac off and it wut the temp is out side. i hav 300w and its a bit much. i hav a 200w comming tomorrow, and 250 comming in aeek for back up..i came home today i lef tthe ac off and my tank was about 94 and i keep it at 82.very stressful

Did you have any casualties?

Why would your temp go up to 94? You either set the heater that high, or, the heater is busted and was stuck in the on position. Not a good situation.

I would say a 200w heater is all you need. What brand do you have? What did you order for backup?

BTW, a wet/dry is a type of sump. How much water are you running in it? That adds to your total system volume.

i hav a 300w all glass aquarium heater.. i keep it around 75 of the setting and with the light it makes it 82-84... i came home and it was like that..i turned it down to 71-73 on the setting and its been around 84 and colling still.. i got marineland stealth 200w, and the back up is marineland stealth 250...i had shmp die..and my wrasse was stressed, his body had a dark red tint and his eye were red, but i blased the ac, and put ince in a bag in the tank and it cooled down.. he got his color back

Sounds like your heater failed in the on position. I would take that heater out and replace it with a new one. I'm not a fan of the Stealth heaters.

I would buy a controller if I were you. It will safeguard if the heater fails again and turn it off before it becomes a problem.

you think it will be okay tonight i got the tank to cool down, i put the temp at 73(so it should be around 80-82 in the tank cuz at 75 its 84...i hoope fedex gets here tomorrow early

I TOTALLY agree.


Just because you had it set at 75 and it went to 84 doesn't mean setting it lower will help. It sounds like it was stuck on, as if it disregarded the setting completely.

well i got marineland stealth it works awsome on my FW..and i had a prob withthe same company heater with the fw thats why i buaght the new one.. i should be good with the new heater...maybe it did get stuck or maybe i got 300w thats way tomuch for my tank,i think between the heater the lights and it being hot oiut did it..

Just be careful. My problem with the Stealth was not related to it sticking on or off. It was stray voltage. One day I stuck my hand in the tank and got zapped.

uhmm really, thats not cool..could hav been just that one..im sure that not good for the fish..it stayd good all day..i left the ac on and i came home on ym break...
