hello
i'm new here and new to this side of the hobby. i have done a search on
cyanobacteria and i have found out a lot of good info on MR
well my problem is my tank is new only a few days old
no fish and corals (obviously) all my parameters are where they should be
i bought my rock from someone i knew and his tank was fine his tank has been running for 3 years i know my temp was up tp 84 for a half a day till i did a partial water change
i'm going to turn my lights off for a few days what else should i do before this gets out of hand
should i also turn the light off on the hang on refugium
i'm not to crazy about dropping chem's in my tank

it's a 30 gallon i have 130w pc fixture waiting for my sunpod to be delivered
the fuge is 18"wide 6"deep 18" high
i have about 3" of miracle mud with 4 pounds of live rock and a small hand full of cheto with a 7w bulb i also just noticed some type of sea star in the fuge i will gt a pic soon
i just found out the guy i got the rock from had an outbreak a few months back would that be the culprit

i would leave the lr out the refug n just have enough lr (30lb) in the main tank. the quality of lr is the most important. it is the backbone of your system. the cheatos alone r good enough in the sump.
cyno usually turns up in 2 main situations:
1.)high nutrient
2.)dead spots(not enough flow)

Dude:
All the new tank will have cyano out break, it will go away by itself after your tank stabilizes. The heat is a huge issue, especially you real light is a sunpod. A good way is to use a small fan to blow at the surface of your water, that will keep temp under control, but you will loose about 1 gal / day in evaporation you will have to make up with ro water.

Let's get specific.
In any case, you are cycling and during a cycle there really is not much concern of what comes and goes. It is too unstable and too early to worry. I would read more about cycling than cyno at this point. You cycle should be short since you have a good source of live rock but there will be a cycle since stuff does die when you move it from one place to another. Good luck.

btw, anemones and polyped corals bleach out quickly if they are exposed to high temps.
I have a RBTA that is almost all white now.

but my temp is hovering around 80-82
got to get some fans up
i didn't check phos or alk have to get a test kit

Eeek I think most people missed that your tank is a few days old. There's nothing you can do this is part of the cycle. Leave it be, don't change any water you'll just prolong the cycle.

Nothing good happens fast. Just be patient.
After this you'll have a few other algae blooms, diatom etc. This is all normal and will continue for some time. After 6-9 months everything will be nice and stable.

Oh BTW that amonia level is toxic but 100% normal for a tank that is a few days old. Stop looking at it, stop testing it, just leave it alone and go back to the tank in 5 weeks.

Ammonia has to go to zero. In the mean time you should see nitrites move up. Then when both are zero you cycle is done except that you will have nitrates. How low the nitartes should be depends on what you have in the tank. It will take months to be mature and stable so do things slowly. Add very little at a time because every increase in the bio load will take some time for your system to catch up with. If the load is too much then things will start dying.

well the tank is up 2 weeks and i'm seeing some of the red slime die off and i see new growths in different places i also see it in my fuge my chaeto is turning red along with my caulerpa is this normal in this stage of the game
