I have a very successful 110 gallon reef with lps, polyps, softies shrooms, i am currently using DI water alone, changing the cartrage every few months. My nitrates are barely detectable, but my phosphates are usually pretty high. I use phosphoban media in my sump but would like to step into getting some SPS in the future.

1) Can I keep using the DI unit and get a phosphate reactor?

2) Or should I just do an extremly large water change and use RODI water, and keep up water changes (I usually doing 5 gallons a week on my 110)

3)Or are both essential

first, buy a TdS meter and start checking your water. Just because you're using DI doesn't mean you're getting 'pure' water. If you don't have any way to check how clean your water actually is, how do you know?

DI water really doesn't have anything to do with nitrates.

I use only DI and it's great for me. I get 0 TDS and I don't waste 4 gallons of water for every gallon of 'clean' water.

Get a phosban reactor. You'll pull those phosphates down to near 0.

I bought a 5 stage ro/di from ariwaterice.com for $150 and it came with a digital TDS meter free. Now I can make sure my water is pure and then double check it if i'm feeling unsure.

I bought a Dual Inline TDS meter for about $20. (I also had a handheld one that was about the same $)

A phosban reactor should be about $70, all said and done.
$35 reactor
$15 media (I use rowaphos)
$15 Minijet you can skip this if you have an old powerhead around.
$2 1/2" tubing it at home depot, you get 10' for about $3 (again, free if you have some lying about)

check your pm.
