(i guess i still qualify as a beginner)
Ok. here's the deal. My tank has a really funky setup in its "filter area" my carbon is supposed to be placed ontop of this huge column of ceramic bio media. I've been told that i don't need it because of my live rock and live sand, but will the carbon be ok sitting at the bottom instead of on top? If not, is it fine to put the ceramic in?
heres a link to a video of my setup.

thanks in advance!

The carbon is fine where it is. bottom or top doesnt matter as long as its someplace where the water flow can get to it. The ceramic is just a place for algae to grow as well as provide another place for waste to accumulate and turn into nitrates. LR rubble would be better because its going to be more porous.

you tanks name is Max

the carbon will be alright on the bottom.
you could prop it up on some eggcrate that would be better, it would give more flow through the whole bag of carbon. the ceramic things are not needed with the live rock in your tank. use the the extra room for some more media.

How about some GFO (phosphate removing media) in a bag instead of the ceramic! As Jon already mentioned it is definitely unnecessary.
