IMHO it is stress that causes them to split some of the time. My RBTA just split overnight. I think the added flow caused it to split. I just happend to take the ball valve of off the return pump which has caused a tremendous amount of flow. Not only did I remove the ball valve, but I aslo incorporated a SWCD to the return. Prior to those changes the RBTA was fed had grown tremendously. The only problem(?) that I could see with it was, and is that it lost it's bubbles. Yes, it has plenty of light as far as I can tell. 150 MH in a 20g AGA, and she has plenty of room to climb higher if it is a insuficient light issue.
