Hey guys, some of you might know a little about my tank, but basically i started with the wrong equipment and not much information. Well i used to have a lot of problems with red slime algae, i had it in every single rock. I removed the live sand and crushed coral, and then i started to have a mini-cycle (diatoms) all over the place. Now, the red slime is gone, but i have green slime? This thing is all over the place, on my powerheads, filter, glass, sand, rocks, and i'm not sure why. I did some research around, but i couldn't find too much information about it. I will get a phosban reactor soon, but i thought that would help get rid of the red slime, not sure on the green slime.
This were my readings a couple days ago:
- Alkalinity: 14
- Nitrate: 0
- PH: 8.0
- Salinity: 1.024
- Temperature: 77.5
- Nitrite: 0.0
- Ammonia: 0.0
My Red Sea test kit has the phosphates above 1.0

It also seems that the rocks are starting to turn white in certain spots, why?

If it helps, this is my tank currently.
2 ocellaris clownfish, blue streak cardinal, lawnmower blenny, frogspawn, mushroom, zoas, 45lb live rock, 20lb live sand, 10 hermit crabs, 7 turbo snails, aquac remora skimmer, hob filter running poly filter and chemi-pure, 3 powerheads, T5 fixture with 2 actinics and 2 - 10000k bulbs

...

bring u water to the swap....

ur phosphates are prob. higher than that. Check ur nitrates again.

All cyano bacteria result from over feedings and dead materials...

Reduce ur lights for a few days. Or turn them off completely. That will do the trick.

Do a few water changes and I bet ur cyano will go away in no time... Dont bother using chemicals to get rid of it, since u will not be fixing the issue.

Many will tel u to syphon it out ( good idea). But it will comeback making u think that u will never fix this issue. But u will. Just have some patience.

well i feed every other day about 1/5 of a mysis cube, and i wait till they eat everything until i feed, i just don't dump the whole thing in

i was just curious as why it went from being red to green?
the phosban reactor should help right??

also, cutting down on the lights, won't that affect my corals???

well I am not sure if phosban will rid u tank of cyanobacteria. I think it would only tame it for a while...

just take 1 week, reduce lights, stop feeding for few days...U will see this problem go away...

Unless I am wrong and its not cyano, but just a normal algae cycle.

You've been through many changes there lately Oriol and I'm sure you've experienced a small mini-cycle from changing the sand..so a few different things might pop up now as your tanks begins to mature again.
I'd bet the addition of the the PH's helped with the cyano issues you were having.
Are you saying the green algae you are now seeing is in the exact same places as the cyano was?
Is any of your clean up grew munching on the green algae?
Cyano (which is actually a bacteria) isn't usually eaten by more than a limited amount of inverts, but it doesn't only have to be red to be cyano..it can also be green or blue/green in color.

That said..yes, a Phosban reactor will be a great addition to your tank as you already knew you were going to be battling phosphates due to your rocks having been used with tap water (way back when :)), so you need it anyway. It can only help.

Have any pics? How long is your photoperiod now?
Keep up with the water changes and get that reactor on there..one step at a time!

Like you've said Kathy, none of the clean-up crew touches the cyano. The Blenny sometimes tries to, but then as soon as it comes into his mouth, it comes right out. The cyano also seems to be in certain spots, i guess spots with not too much flow, but like i said, i will be buying the Phosban Reactor tomorrow.

As far as the lights go, the actinics kick in at around 4 or so, and the whites kick in at around 5, maybe a bit earlier than that, and then they go off at around 11:45 or so, with the actinics shutting off at around 1.

Is there any part of the rocks you aren't having this issue, and is your flow aimed in those directions or not?
From what you wrote in your PM..it does sound like green cyano.
Get the turkey baster & suck put as much as you can. Redirect your flow so those areas are getting more flow..for starters.
Wouldn't hurt to take 1 hour off either end of your light cycle..even though I know you don't want to :)

It's the holiday season and the flasher is broken, when it is working it switches from red to green every 2 seconds! :lol2:
