If I put it in my tank will it become live rock ?I have live rock from tonga in there allready . Will this stuff just spread or do I need to put a special kind of rock to host this stuf ? Thanks and Happy Holidays Jason
Jayson, from my experience I had gotten a bucket full of so called rubble from someone a few years back which I have been using for my clams to attach to. They are actually getting covered with coraline algea.
Actually old coral skeletons make some really unusual shapes for aquascaping. I have a lot of large pieces from a 150 FO I had in the early '80's that I cut up to make shelf rock. It is wild looking.
THe tonga branch live rock is basically dead sps corals that have accumulated sand and calcium around the skeletons. So yeah keep your dead hard corals in your aquarium.
I have some old rock (use to be live until a boo boo lol). If I just add it to my tank and get a couple more live pieces will it become live rock also? I have coraline algae growing on the back walls of tank will that work also. Probably take forever right?
Just about anything becomes 'live' after it stays in your tank for a while. Bacteria will cling to it even if it is not porous and so will algea whether coraline or nusance. And if it is porous then pods can also find a home there plus many other critters.
some of the greatest live rock in my tank is dead coral that my great grandfather picked up off the beaches in Mexico like 50 years ago!!! have a ball!
