ok as i am coming closer to finishing projest, i am really up in the air on how i want to do my drain, really dont want an internal drain { cant drill bottom of tank } and the dimensions are 20x18x26 dont want to loose tank space, but kinda pariniodabout it breaking loose and poof flood, this is the method i really want to do though. or i can put a acrylic box in top corner of tank that would be 4x4x8 with back cut and drain pipe coming out. if you have a external overflow would love to see pic's and how long have you had it for. ty rick

Contact custom king. He seems to make stuff for those in need. I know he just made some overflows for those who've been looking. Not sure if its for the bottom or back drain.

I make these for all my tanks, not exactly a overflow box, but it works. I don't know if this helps, but tanks runs super quiet.

I used a external overflow for 4 year, they suck! Im not saying this because I joined the RR people but it such a pain in the ass

1) It gets filled up with algae and hard to clean (it sux)
2) Every time you have to do a water change, now you have to get a tube suck water and restart (sux)
3) If you have to you have to, but I am so much better with water changes, becuase I hated starting the syphon (not sure how to spell that word)

A properly desinged and set up OFB does not need to be reprimed if you shut the system down. You either have a poorly designed OFB or have it set up wrong.

I use an external overflow thats custom built and <3 it. Only problem is if your dremeling out slots in the tank for the overflow teeth, any chip can cause the back to crack if there is the slightest vibration in the tank coming from return pump. And if you've ever dremeled out anything in a tank you know the amount of small chips it creates even after you spent your time with a sanding bit to fix/correct it. Ive lost one tank to a badly vibrating pump and the overflow teeth done that way, i made adjusments on the teeth and didn;t sand well enough to get the cracks out.

Best way is to cut out a square/rectangle in the glass where the teeth go and layer the back with a piece of black acrylic and cut the teeth out in the acrylic. Then seal the acrylic in with silicone, and just sand/roughen the spots where the acrylic meet the silicone and seal the spot in the back between the teeth and the glass so no water goes between. Hope that helps. Check out luismustdie's turtle tank and if u need pics i can take some.

Try talking to Russ or Jim. I know Russ made an eternal o/f for Dimetry , I think and when I saw it it lookd kick ass. But he id say it was a pita to get the slots done.

What I ahve also sen is if you cut the top of the tank brace and then, dremel out a little dip or valley and then seal some teeth to it. Kinda like what was said above. Just not cutting the hole sq out.
