Just hooked up my skimmer and dont know if its working

I just installed my ASM g-1 skimmer up in my sump. but i dont know if its working right. I get large bubbles that just go straight up. It was my thought that they should be very fine bubbles that spiral up. I also thought it should be so full of smal bubbles that you would not be able to see threw it but its ever clear with large bubbles. The tank is only filled with RO water right now. NO livestock at all or salt.

ok thank for the info. No where in my books did it ever say that it wont work in fresh water. I was just getting worried that the skimmer was bad.

on a side note skimmer can be though rarely are used in freshwater.
I heard of and spoke with people using them in African Cichlid tanks and Goldfish/Koi tanks. They said it removed very little dissolved organics(but something was removed) but like the idea of the water being saturated with oxygen.

They also used hydrometers & add salt to Cichlid tanks, so I guess it's not out of the question in that application.

they would use the trace mineral salt. No hydrometer.
African Chiclids are not brackish they're just from a high p.h.

Sean, I think that depends on which rift lake they're from. Closer to the ocean = higher salinity.

You're right, there are special salt & formulas for some african cichlid tank's water checmistry that make saltwater look like freshwater.

My bad.
