Hi, my name is Ian. I am in Nassau County. I set up a 24 gallon Aquapod a few weeks ago. Got about 18 lbs of live rock, 2 bags of live sand, using a poly filter. I was told to take out the sponges and bio balls & use a poly fliter instead. Its a closed hood tank with the actinic blue, regular flourescent & 3 blue LED's. I am using a maxi-jet 900 power head & a Koralia 400 GPH circulator. Any tips or ideas on how to make this better? Thanks a bunch!!

Ian, It's only been 'a few weeks" what needs to be better at this point. Just take it REAL slow. You have enough to start with,
Oh wait, you need about 20 gallons of R/O water and some salt.
WELCOME,
When you are ready I can give you some starts Zoanthids if you like.

Hey All

Hello there to everyone who responded. I will answer all 3 ppl at once here....lol. First, Mr. First...lol That sounds funny.... DUH...Lol I forgot to list that I also have WATER in the tank...lol. That was a good one, though. I did a 10% water change yesterday with the premade natural bottled sea water. Everything looks fine. I got some misinformation from the store I shopped at. They told me that because I used a lot of live sand & live rock &* the fact that they sold me a packet of Bio Spira, I could stock the tank immediately. I added a CUC at the beginning of the week which includes 2 Hermit Crabs, & 5 snails. Not sure which variety. I added a Cleaner shrimp yesterday. They also sold me a Yellow Leather Coral last week which seems to be thriving & a Zoanthid which is doing pretty well right now. I noticed what seems to be a feather duster growing out of one of my rocks. Miss Kathy, As I mentioned above, I don't have a RO unit yet. I originally used tap water (yes, I know...) & am using bottled sea water for weekly changes. One thing that is annoying me is that I cant get the live rock to lay out exactly the way I want it. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Also, do I need Purigen & Chemi Pure? Oh, and Mr. First, I might take u up on that offer..... Well, thats all for now! Thanks to all who wrote back!!

Sup kid, glad to see ya make it onto the site. Also, how long has the tank been running for again? If it was recently setup, you might not need to do any water changes yet. You usually dont need to do any water changes for about 6 weeks after setup. BTW Check your private messages.... :wink1:

Woah all that with only a few weeks:bigeyes2: well first stop buying livestock lol duh.

invest in an RO, that stuff your using is fine for changes but not topoffs, evaporation only rids the tank of H20,not salt so if you topoff with saltwater and not freshwater then you get a salt buildup. If you must you can just you can just top off with bottled water but an RO is easier and eventualy will save you $$$$

Not to contradict dj but I think he didn't read that you have critters in there, when you cycle with no livestock your not supposed to change the water because water quality isn't an issue but once you have livestock it is an issue.

It seems that even though you added those little guys a little early your not in any trouble and the feather duster growth is a good sign, do you have corraline? It's basicly a hard algea thats usualy purple/pink but can be green and other colors, that stuff is a good indicator of a healthy tank.

Hey H2O freak. I do have Corraline but don't remember if it was on the rock prior to me putting it in. Aslo, I got Purigen. Do I hang the mesh anywhere or just lay it in the filter area of the tank? If anyone can advise, that would be great!! Also, i am done adding for a few weeks. I want to do this right!! lol

Welcome to MR

I also have a 24 gallon Aquapod with the PC lighting you have.

The following has worked for me.

I have a bag of Chemi-Pure in chamber 1 (intake) and the poly-filter in chamber 2. I also use poly-fil or filter floss to catch any big stuff floating around at the intake. I change the floss and do a 3 gallon water change with RO/DI and Reef Crystals salt weekly.

Any questions dont be afraid to ask.

Let me know what everyone thinks. Also, getting a lot of red algae on the live sand & green algae everyday on the front of the tank. How do i get rid of it? Thanks!!
