I have searched and came up with a few opinions on the issue, but would like to see if maybe there are more out there.

Our tank 120g is changing temp from 76F-73F overnight. I am planning on raising the heaters another degree or two so the daytime and in turn nighttime temp won't be so low. Have been doing this gradually considering we don't have a chiller (yet). And there is nothing in the tank but some LR and a few snails at this point, would like to have it all figured out by the swap though:eek:

Is this going to pose a problem if the tank remains within the range of 78F-75F? Does three degrees cause for a lot of unneeded stress? Will a chiller with heater solve this issue?

TIA

Thanks all, incase you haven't noticed I'm a bit stressed out about doing it right :splitspin

Funny thing happened today, looked over at the tank and saw some black thing running along the glass. Jumped out of the chair and ran over to the tank only to discover it was a fly on the glass (outside the tank):duh:, oh the joys of nice weather. I think I need a new perscription of my glasses, that or I need to "step away from the tank" for a while.

I'm a bit obssessed with making sure no uglies hitched a ride on the rocks into the tank.

Wow, how did I miss that.. My bad... But I never fed cyclopeeze for immune system boosting... I believe good water quality,(temp stability, nutrient levels, low phosphate and nitrate)an appropriate sized UV and a properly dialed in computer should keep ich away...
So keep the tank away from ST levels and you should be fine after these additions...
Oh yeah chillers act like refrigerators in a different room.. I would go with a computer and fans... Something like a Reefkeeper or similar based on your other needs...

Ambient room temp will affect your tank size considerably! Have you checked temps in different areas of the tank or just one?. Using a different water flow or multiple within the tank will stabilize temps. Then you can consider your target temp.
Its all about ZEn you know. Having the chiller and heater always fighting will not get you your best results. Only a good combination of inside outside temp with good circulation will get you your desired results.
As far as livestock they are used to changes (unless extreme) or otherwise they would die!
Only a thought!

Currently we have four temperature probes in the tank. One is in the refugium, on is in the middle of the tank, one is near the surface of the water and one is near the bottom/sandbed in the tank. Refugium is warmer, that is where the heaters are, by two degrees from the tank. All of the temps in the tank are right on and only vary by a tenth of a degree on the digital themometers.

The room temp varies, it gets cooler at night. I have yet to temp check the actual room though, it does seem in the mid to high sixties. I am planning on throwing a themometer in the room this weekend and document the changes from different parts of the day. It is a large room, unfinished, concrete floor/walls, basement, no heat... and always is the coolest area in the house, even when it's in the high 80's -90's in summer.

I'm using 1/10 current chiller with a heater port so the heaters controlled by the chillers control unit the tank stays at 76 with 3 175 mh day and night :splitspin

Powder brown and blue tangs can't handle 4 degree fluctuation from 78 to 74..

its funny u mentioned this cause i have noticed the same problem with my naso tang and my baby hippo tang... they get ich when this happens.

i now try to keep my temps as stable as possible 77 degrees however with the summer coming i tend to see the temp creep up during the day and fall back at nite... time to invest in a chiller
