Hey all,

I just upgraded my 24G AquaPod lighting from the Power Compact light that came with it to the 14K Sunpod Metal Halide light. What a difference!!!! I have a question, though. How long should I leave the metal halide light on for per day. Also, the Sunpod has both white & blue LED lights. I used to leave the blue LED's on all night. I imagine that the white LEDs should be on between the metal halide light & the blue nocturnal LED's, but for how long? Thanks!!

How long should I leave my metal halide lights on?

This will depend on the corals you are keeping and if you are upgrading your existing lighting. Most people will run their metal halide bulbs for 8–12 hours per day. If you are upgrading in lighting (from PC or VHO) to metal halide lighting, you will want to acclimate the corals to the new light. This can be accomplished by running the lights for shorter times for the first few weeks, gradually increasing the running time one week at a time until you reach your final photoperiod.

Above is a cut and paste job. I think its personal preference and also I think the minimum should be 6 hours.

Ian, I run my sunpod on three timers. First i run the while LED's for an hour or so first and then have them turn off when on the second timer I have the Halides kick on for 8 hours. Right before they switch off at night, on a third timer I have the blue LED's turn on for about 2 more hours giving the nice blue cascading night time effect. I feel that this gives a more natural light cycle, and so far has had positive results.

I have a JBJ Nano from Nanotuners with upgraded lights. I have the actinics on from 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM. The Halides are on from 10AM till 5PM. My lunar lights come on at 7:30PM till 11PM. The tank is in darkness till the actinics come on at 8:30 AM and everyone seems to be happy. I find this to be a very natural Day to Night lighting schedule.
