i think i wanna add a sump to my tank...i have a 40 breeder and i wanna use a 20g h sump. i have a mag 12 and an overflow box kit. what else do i need? does the sump really need baffles?

I think a mag 12 might be a little too much for your setup.

A Mag 12 is going to be a little big for your setup.

No... baffles are not a necessity. But you will want to do something in terms of micro bubble control, if not baffles then filter socks.
