imo you don't really NEED anything in this hobby except curiosity, and maybe a skimmer
i just drilled a siphon break into my return because i am not sure i trust the check valve i was using, and with a break there is nothing mechanically that can fail and flood your floor (except for the hole getting clogged).
You will need a siphon break, if your sump can't handle all of the back flow. Just drill a 1/4" hole on the return pipe. Water will shoot out of this hole, so you want the hole pointing in a direction that can accommodate the water (I.e. not facing your lamps).
np he will not need one, nanchil you nevr called me yesterday to go to hd, tommorrow night we will go get the stuff and ill come over and plumb it for you, and why would anyone need a syphon on the return ? wwater will only drain to the point that the lowest level the return spout is at
if you need a siphon break, your design is what you should be contemplating. You should be able to set the system up so that a siphon break isn't necessary. if it is necessary, you should consider making adjustments to the returns as best you can before drilling the break - once you drill, no turning back. Avoid check valves at all cost - they eventually fail.
