Please help, my MP40W is rattling, it sounds like a 2 stroke motor. I have tried adjusting the dry side, re-read the manual, cleaned the wetside but all to no luck. I have 2 MP40W's and the other is running well, both on 'reefcrest' mode. I did make one change; I turned the pump off and rotated the wet side so to stop the pump from sucking in air, then the rattle. I gave it a day to settle in but the rattling hasn't stopped. I rotated the pump back to it's original config...no luck. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

I found that when I had a rattling sound I had an alignement problem. To solve the problem I moved the motor side (slowly as if you move it to much they'll seperate.) while the pump was still on till I heard the rattle noise abate. Hope this helps.

sounds like it's alignment
yes it does - but it is aligned, I've tried moving around the dry side w/ no change - only noiser. The rattle sounds like it's coming from the dry side. Does anyone know what can break or come loose on the dry side?

Are these version 1 or 2, if they are the version 1 check the wet side magnet as they are known to rust and warp. On the version 2 check the pin spacer, the pump may have shifted and is no longer sitting even to the glass. The last thing you can do is pull the dry side away from the tank and see if it still makes the noise as it may be a support call to Vortech.

Thanks qy7400, I did notice that while adjusting alignment if I pulled the dry side very slightly away from the glass the rattling stopped. I have V2 so I'll check the pin spacer and make sure the unit is even on the glass. If that dosen't work then I'll try tech support

This may sound like an obvious question, but do you have it set to the right glass thickness? That can cause for the rattling as well if it is aligned properly. If you put a call in to them, they'll be more than happy to walk you through what to do. Very helpful. :) Good luck.

Hey, we're almost neighbors! Thanks for the suggestion. My pump had been working well until I rotated the wet end to eliminate air being sucked into it. I periodically move my pumps a little to 'mix things up' in my tank. This move began the rattling and I haven't been able to get it to stop, it's not alignment but I don't know what else it could be. I'll follow up w/ Vortech

Will if the pin spacer and motor appear fine look at the wet end again, perhaps a snail or worm is trowing the impeller off balance; perhaps the screw that holds it all together came loose. Another thing you can try as you have 2 is swap the wet ends and see if the noise follows and of course the call EchoTech is always an option as the support guys are great.

Good suggestions, I'll try the screw :duh: and switch the 2 wet sides. I cleaned the rattler so there is nothing stuck in there - sad to say but I am looking fwd to speaking w/ a support dept. that actually helps!
