Replacing lights

I have some new bulbs coming in and im wondering about shocking my tank. Does anyone know if I can hurt anything in my tank by replacing some really old worn out bulbs with new ones? One actinic only works on one side and the day light is just dull.

If they are that old you could shock the corals by introducing them to a lot stronger light, safe bet would be to reduce the time the lights are on to a few hours and slowly keep them on longer until you reach your target time.

You can also shade them by putting a screen, mesh, eggcrate, etc. over the top of the tank.

Can you raise the lights so they are a little higher and then slowly move them back down? Thats what i do..
