I have a 180g that Im in the final stages of plumbing. The final peice of the plumbing puzzle would be the return pump. I am considering the "Iwaki 1173". Its a 1500gph pump. At a head height 6', I figure that should give me a turnover of around 7.5x. Is this sufficient enough? How loud are these pumps? Thanks,
JV.

This is a tricky question as it depends how much flow you want in your tank, how big your sump and what supplemental powerheads/pumps you have running. Also what are your return pipes rated for, most of them are 600gphs each.

I didnt know the lines where rated. Im using regular homedepot 1" pvc pipe for return lines. The Sump is a 55g with refugium. As for in tank power heads Im not yet sure what Im gonna run. But I thought there was a suggested amount of turnover that a tank requires. I was under the impression it was 7-10x an HR. Am I wrong?

You might want to go with the smaller return pump and use powerheads for flow, saves more electricity that way. 1000gph return pump is at least 100W and 1200 gph K4 is only like 23W.

I'd go with a Dart or 2.. Why do you want power heads all over the place if your return pump is sufficient, you shouldn't need powerheads.. This is a common mistake most people make.. You have a 180 not a 90.. If your tank can handle a bigger pump then go with it.. I run 2 darts on my system and these are also running the skimmer.. Good plumbing will give you all you need strategically placed, about 4 outlets with locline and eductors... You'll be able to eliminate all those powerheads extra electric bill cost.. Dart is a very good pump it can be turned down to use less power and create less flow.. Listen to someone with a 300+ gallon system..
