Hello i was deciding between getting a koralia 2 or koralia 3 for my 46 gallon bowfront. Any strong opinions? Are the koralias worht it / are there different powerheads that anyone recommends? I'm just worried that the 2 or 3 will be too powerful and i won't be able to adjust the flow rate...

It depends on what you are going to keep in your tank and the position of the koralias .One advantage is that they will not suck up your fish .I think the no.3 is too strong thats 850 gals each an hour for a 46 gal.If you try the no. 2 and it's too strong try bounceing the current off the side of the tank.

I have a Koralia 1 in my 29 gallon, and it's just about enough additional flow. I'm guessing you could probably go with a 2. You can mod them to change the flow a bit -- get some strip plastic to block up some of the intakes, or clip off some of the guards to increase the flow a bit. Worst comes to worst, they're not terribly expensive, and you can probably find someone on here that thinks their 3 is a bit too much and wants a 2. ;)

Sorry for asking so many questions ! but what about this option? What if i get 1 koralia 1 to start with (think i can find it for like 25 dollars) then if it's not strong enough i buy a second one for the opposite wall. In the end i'll pay 10 extra dollars but won't have to worry about blowing any of the fish out of the tank haha. Does this sound like an okay plan? or am i jsut really better off just getting 1 koralia 2?

Well actualy the more water flow you have the better . Direct water flow is the problem when you have the water flow pointing directly on your INVERTS.

I'm currently running a pair of Koralia 3's in my 90 gallon and it is a LOT of flow. I borderline wish I had gone with 2's instead. It's not a direct flow, but they do move a LOT of water.

if you are planning to keep sps corals, 3's Koralia is not enough flow...

Oh, I agree that they aren't enough on their own. Between them, the return from the sump, and the eductors I plan to add I'm estimating around 3800gph total flow for the tank. I'm not looking to do much SPS just yet though, mostly softies and LPS. Unless you think I would still need more?

Though my big concern with the Koralia's is that they have such a broad flow pattern. I've found it quite easy to rip the sand bed apart, even with them mounted in the top 6" of the tank.

Okay, you know all those slots around the rear portion of the pump to let water in? The plastic between them -- just snip off every other one, or every third, or leave every third -- whatever. Of course, keep in mind that this will increase the hazard to your livestock, and may be completely retarded to do (if you've got roving anemones) or absolutely wouldn't matter. (SPS and larger, non-stupid fish.)

I've heard that removing a significant portion of the bits can cause the pump to run too fast and overheat, so YMMV. It'd be good as part of a wavemaker system where it's in periodic use, but not for always-on, depending on the level of modification. I bear no responsibility for any catastrophe or horror you visit on yourself, your tank, your livestock, or your family by modding your pumps. :)
