Hi,

I bought a used system with a Current GAMMA 25w UV sterilizer about a 1 year ago. I never replaced the bulb. It's running on a 110 gallon tank. Since I was making some sump upgrades and adding some reactors I was going to replace it. It seemed to be lighting up just fine but a friend said I should replace it. It costs about $45.

Should it be replaced when it goes out or every year/quarter etc.?
How often should the bulb be replaced?

If it is a T5 style bulb (which I think it is), manufacturer recommends 12-14 month for replacement.
You should also pull the quartz sleeve out for cleaning. You should notice a white hard film which is calcium deposit. This basically blocks the UV light's effectiveness. Be careful because the quartz sleeve can be easily cracked.

Longest I would say would be 1 yr but after 6 months if you start to see the glass building up algae fast i would replace it. Its the same as you light on your tank even thou the build light up after time they do loss there intensity.
