Simple Question re: Moving a Tank

How long can my tank go without pumps or powerheads running? My reason is that I am thinking of moving my Solana and I will need to remove a good portion of the water and obviously turn off the pumps. I only have 3 fish and can try to net them and put them in a 5 gal. bucket with a PH, although I wonder how cooperative the fish will be with being captured.

How long can a coral go without being in water? I have a leaf plate coral that would be above the line of how much water I want to remove when doing the move.

Thanks!

If you are moving a tank I would remove all of the water and rock to buckets and then refill it when you are completely done.

I wasn't clear, so this may affect the answer. I want to move it 10 feet on a wooden floor. I just want to put it in a different place in the room.

Pull everything out still hold?

Thanks.

The tank is 34 gal Solana. The PITA factor is that I used putty on my rock work so getting them out may prove to be tough. I have never done that before, it's my first tank, so I have no idea how tough it will be to break the rock into manageable pieces.

So maybe the question should be, "How hard is it to break apart putty on my rock work?".

pull the rock... you can break it up pretty easily with just the claw (rear) of a hammer.. or use a chisel if you want to be more precise.. moving it with rock in it is a good way to risk breaking a tank...since you are only talking about 30 or so lbs of rock, and the solana has no center brace, just pull the whole thing out would be my suggestion.

cant go very long without pumps or powerheads running. when i moved my tank i had everything prepared for the trip. Battery powered air pump for each 5g bucket used.

Unfortunately before i even removed the fish from the tank, 8 of 9 fish died from lack of oxygen during the 4-5 hours my pumps were shut down when i was taking the tank apart. The 2 Tunze powerheads were running the entire time, it wasnt enough.

10 feet or 10 blocks or 10 miles, I would still take everything out.

"How hard is it to break apart putty on my rock work?".

Pretty easy. Just use your hands and wiggle the pieces. The putty usually "unsticks" from one side or the other. I have broken mine apart a few times and I only have ten inch biceps:) Not sure you should use a hammer near your tank.

As stated - no tank with rock or water in it should be moved intact. You need to remove them first or you stand an excellent chance of cracking the tank.

Thanks again to all replies. If I end up relocating the tank I'm going to follow the unanimous advice and remove it all.

The last thing I want is an exploding tank! The 2nd to last is a slow leak.
