My apartment has good old NYC steam heat. Since it is summer I cannot measure the temperature near the steam riser. Would anyone know how close to a steam riser that I can put my tank? I would think 2 feet is fine.

John if you stand 2 feet from the riser in the winter time can you feel it? If so is it hot to you?

you can wrap the steam pipe with insulation if you need to...in my old apt. my 90 was near a vertical steam pipe and i had some issues keeping the temp stable until i wrapped with a thick layer of insulation material (not sure what it was but it came in big sheets and had a mylar looking covering on one side)

That's a good idea. Plus it would cover up my bad paint job.

My 120 fowlr sits by a south facing window between a riser and a radiator. So far after 2 years I have not had any heat related problems from any of the above.
Disclaimer, that is my situation and it is working for me. This does not mean that it will work for you......;)
