How true.

But all this will probably fall on deaf ears. They are too gung ho to start "reefing". All these newbies see are the beautiful tanks with all the colorful corals. They don't know all the hard work and commitment it takes to get to that level.

Ive done alot of reading and research just thought i would get some help from here. And excuse me how did u start reef keeping were u an expert when u entered? everyone starts off knowing a little. So we all start off as newbies. And what got you into reef keeping wasnt it the way the tank was setup which was much different then fw. So stop saying that when im new im not gonna knwo anything cause your might scare off anyone that is reading this tank i know several things but not everything. So stay positive....

This is why I say start small(er) and work up. Plus it alleviates alot of the cost when you buy an all in one tank because most of the equipment is built in. Down the road you can expand.

In reefing, most likely you will run into situation that you need stronger skimmer and strong lighting. It's unlikely you are like me, who love corals that don't need light such as Sun coral, Dendro, .... Budget for stronger light is something you should pay high attention. For coral keeping, I also find temperature control being the most important of all. Many reefers, newbies(who may not see the importance of a chiller) and experts(who thought they can get away with one) have major crashes due to one(even just one) hot day. Budget yourself something to control temperature, AC, chiller, fan or such. One time I lost a $1000 fish because my parrot turn the knob of my heater.

For most fish only tanks, the requirement is a lot more forgiving, a chiller or constant AC may not be needed and strong light is not needed either.

If you are going for a reef, 55G AGA type tank is worst as the ratio of the height and depth makes it very difficult to do aquascape and maintenance.

I am not trying to discourage you. The fact that you asked in your first post "What else do I need?" tells me that you have not researched this enough.

Spend some time reading the tank threads in the forum and see for yourself, how much you need to learn and what it entails to run a proper reef tank.

Or don't, it is ultimately up to you.

Look at the 34 solana and the ecco cube that foster and smith sells. Nice tanks. Initial investment is high(er) but you get good equipment right from the start and there is only a need to upgrade the skimmer in my opinion, but if you don't want to upgrade them you don't have to because they are good pieces of equipment from the start.

Look at my tank threads in my sig, see if they are something you would like to do instead. The only thing I advise with a nano is that you do waterchanges more frequently. I change 5 gallons every 2 weeks.

I also keep 5 gallons ready to go just in case.

55 was ok but the front to back was to constricting when it came to rock placement and clearance between the rock and the glass.
