Did the ha get transferred from the previous tank? How long ago did you start the new tank? Did you start with ro/di or tap water?
What have you done so far? How old are your bulbs?
What are your water parameters?

In the mean time here are a few things you can get started with:

RO/DI water changes, good selection of ha eater cuc, less photo period, monitor feedings, manually pluck it out (carefully not to release not 1 tiny strand into water current, or you'll have given it opportunity to grab hold else where). Have 2 buckets with water on hand while doing this. One bucket you throw the algae into the other you rinse your hand/hands before placing back into the tank.:)
Hope that helps in some small way, or large.;)

I tried the sea slug route and it died it a few days...not sure why cause my tank was filled with hair algae. I've actually let it continue to grow in one area of my tank and my Kole tang nibbles all day. Everyone seems to be pointing to Phosphates as the cause. Try and throw a Rowaphos in your sump assuming you test for phosphates and its present.
Last advice: You'll get rid of it over time. Dont try an overnight fix cause it won't work. Its a battle but be patient and it'll go away if you do things right.

Test your tank ... post the results ... hair algae = something is off.

RO/DI water or tap?

Sea Slug and Crabs are only a temporary fix, which is fine if that's what you want.

  • Check your parameters
  • Cut lighting times
  • Ensure good flow - made a huge difference in my personal tank
  • Perform frequent (weekly) smaller water changes
  • Manually prune as much hair algae as possible
  • Make sure you have a good protein skimmer
  • Use GFO

Critters will not solve the problem. Follow advice given relating to tank maintenance and over time you will win. Then critters can help control the little bit that remaains. In the mean time your best bet is removal per advice presented here.

Rainsford goby will help But I agree that you need to get the root cause to settle it. I do know some have tried Algaefix marine for some algae outbreaks. I would do some research first though...and again even is the algaefix works you still need to get the root cause under control. Nutrients... Are you running bioballs...chrushed coral substrate these are suspected by many to also. Be patient nothing good happens fast in this hobby.

I've heard the sally light foot crabs and emerald crabs work well. I have been having the same problem and just purchased a few of each.

good luck

+1 for awibrandy's reccomendatons and dcg1286's comments. HA=problem somewhere. I've had some luck in the past with mexican turbo snails, but they tend to knock over corals as they move around the tank. They grow to escargot size too <g>.
