It isn't a MUST for that layout but that is a very commonly used layout. How big is your display tank for your sump to be only 10 gallons?

Here is my sump, which I didn't make with that specific layout.

Mine is Refugium l Return l Skimmer Section. Water goes into the skimmer section, goes into return. Return pump is split to display and refugium. Refugium spills back into the return.
