I keep them in a 5G with 1-2 gallons of water and every few days I rinse them out with dechlorinated water or whenever the water looks cloudy.

I don't feed them and it doesn't seem like they foul the water as water after a while of keeping them.

How long are you able to keep them alive in this fashion?

Well, so far it's been 2 weeks now going on 3. :-D

Depending on portion size though from the LFS, it can vary, the place I get it from gives a lot and what you see in the picture is already half fed to my f/w fish.

I know petland sells them in smaller portions like those condiment containers.

They are kept in cold water. Make sure you remove all the dead ones. When I dump them into the bucket initially, I add 1-2 gallon then swish it around in a circular motion and they would clump into one big ball. Anything dead or debris would float and you can slowly pour it away, given so much I wouldn't worry about losing some down the drain.

After a first week of keeping them they seem to foul the water quickly every day like they were detoxing. Now they're relatively easy to keep and doesn't stink and can go at least 2-3 days now and no smell or cloudiness.

Awilda, I can get worms near my house or in Bayside in Fish Town. I buy them by the ounce and in my worm keeper they live forever. I rarely have to change the water and never find a dead worm. I have been feeding these things to my fishfor almost 50 years and if it were not for blackworms, I would not be in this hobby. That little copperband is healed and almost back to perfect condition and all I did was feed him blackworms 3 times a day.
I would really like to give this fish to someone who feeds live worms as that is what IMO a copperband needs to stay alive and healthy.

Paul, I will pass on the fish as I don't think I'll be able to feed black worms,

I know Dace. They are not easy and you really do need to take some extra care with them.

If you don't believe in the power of blackworms, look at these two pictures
This one is today and the second one is from about 3 days ago. She is almost completely healed from the beating she received from my older copperband.

Fishtankfrank if you feed those foods you may be the perfect person.
I know many people want fish like this but I am not sure many could keep it alive very long without the proper foods.
I will try to let you know tomorrow as I am having a little problem now with family illness but I will get back to you. I am 15 minutes from you.
