Hey,

Free small bag of chaeto (large fist size vs full gallon bag so I can share the 'green').
I have enough for...5 portions.

Why is it free?
I do not feel that Chaeto should ever be paid for, especially in the context of NYC and a site like this, where at least 2-5x a month I feel like 'free chaeto' threads go up and no one really desperately needs the stuff. I know some people buy it up at stores (trust me I was shocked, esp. the portion size!) and from local reefers for $15, but I truly do not understand why.

Literally, if I do not take portions out of my tank (my sump is pretty big so I don't really have to but I like to remove a bit every month to feel safe), eventually, it could die (maybe the bottom that isn't getting light because the population is too dense) and release the "unwanted" nutrients it removed from my tank, right back into it. That or in general, I'd become space limited- which is why I'm giving away right now.

So, the only options are to either pass a portion forward and let it grow and help clean someone else's tank or throw it in the garbage.

So, why would I sell that to you when you are rescuing it from the garbage?

SMH....

:)
Please only post here if you want the chaeto, or have something to talk about in the same positive vein my post.

haha...this may be one of the most opinionated/wth threads I've posted in my 8 yrs on this site :biggrinpa

jaywee- :) I'm glad it's doing well for you!!! I added dragon's breath to my sump, a small piece. If you want a piece in a month let me know!!!

Louner- sure thing. Pm me about your availability to come to BK.
I'm not usually in the BX, though I see on my work calendar I will be there Feb 9th at the BX Writing Academy (looks like 3 schools sharing one building) from 10am to 12:30. Not sure if I'll be hanging around. If so, I'd probably be near the BX lebanon health ctr I think I have friends that work there. If they aren't available I'll be going home afterwards.

send pm with availability details. I should be home/in my area all weekend. But pm me times you are actually able to stop by and I'll pick a time frame to work around.

During the week, same thing, send me times you are in the area and I'll pick based on my work schedule.

Hm, well, to some people it is a biological way of reducing phosphate in the aquarium. It is used because plants uptake phosphate (among other things like potassium, and nitrogen) in order to grow.

So start with a bit of chaeto or mangrove or some other macroalgae and it will work along side high quality reef husbandry and then bandaid solutions like chemicals i.e. gfo to reduce phosphate.

The levels are primarily concerning because some people believe that high phosphate (in addition to nitrates) limit your ability to keep more sensitive corals like sps.

For the past 6 mos I have not used any chemical additives to reduce my phosphate levels. I grow chaeto in my sump (I have a cheapo par 38 bulb, and I do nothing else to gwt it to grow). My phosphate is .03 on hanna meter and .025 on api test kit.

I say "some people" only because every tank is different. Some people run high phosphate and nitrate tanks and are able to keep healthy and colorful sps/other coral. Some people cannot.

I hope that helps!
