One line takes water out to drain and the other line takes new saltwater in to the tank. You program how many gallons you want to do a day and it does it over a course of 24hrs. you can see it on You tube in action.

I'm not in the sps game so gradual water changes arent needed any longer so now when I feed my corals every week I'll do the water change at the same time.
This is a great unit with 2 great pumps that can be used for dosing accurately as well besides water changes.
