I am recent Pratt graduate and have been creating high end works out of acrylic. I was wondering if any fellow reefers would be interested in a acrylic photo box so as to take pictures of your corals without a underwater enclosure. The piece is similar to that of Melev's

I am interested, though a little reluctant because if it leaks my camera and lenses are expensive. Would the boxes be deep enough to accomodate an SLR with a macro lens?

Sure would! I am going make it adjustable so that you can change out lenses.

All boxes will be leak tested before sold.

I am going to measure off a Digital Nikon SLR and see if I can make for fingers, it might be a little tough for those who not have AF.

The boxes will be suspended in the water by the user. I can also make sutom sizes for those interested and willing to spend a few extra $

Point and shoot for now (Canon sd400), but hopefully a Nikon D40 or Canon EOS 350D in the future.

The box is basically 6 x 4. Depending on how you make the walls, the internal area may be decreased to the point that the lens won't fit properly. I would try to keep it at 3.5 to 4" tall if possible.

The distance from the top lip of the box to the clear acrylic viewing panel should be about 6". And the screw hole that the camera affixes to should be 2.5" above the top lip of the box. That seems to permit the photographer access to many buttons on the camera and hold on to it while taking pictures.

The back panel with the hook is around 15" - 16" long before gluing and bending. The nice thing about that hook is you can hang the box on the edge of the tank when not in use or use it to stablize the camera on the tank's perimeter when shooting pictures.

You can find clear glue-on feet at Home Depot that can be glued on the corners. That way when you put the box down on the counter you don't have to worry about scratching the viewing panel accidentally.

I would suggest you build one or two, and see how they come out first. Take a few pictures of it so your buyers can see it.
