No problem, it is a macroalgae that is good for nutrient export. People generally keep it in their refugium and it sucks up a lot of nitrates, helps keep nuisance algae down. Its favored over other macroalgae cause it doesnt go sexual and there is not a risk of it polluting your tank.

Thanks, does the macroalgae require lighting ( I assume yes as its kept in a refugium)? Does cheeto multipy (hence people giving away for free)? Are there any requirments to keep cheeto or is it self reliant on excess nutrients in water?

Sorry to drag this thread on, but I always ask questions to better my knowledge.

Hello. I would like to set up a refugium. I have the unit itself but where do I get the live sand from? I know that LFS sell the active sand but its in very large bags indeed...about 17 llbs for like $20.00 or something. Its a waste since I will only need about 5 llbs (I have a 26 gallon tank).

Bryopsis is getting out of control and I need to get this set up.

Any advice?

I could poss help on this too. My tank is also small and I had a lot of extra live sand. I've left the bag opened so I don't know if it drys out quickly but you're welcome to what I've got if you want it.

My refugium has been up for two or three months and I have a lot of stuff living in there so I could certainly grab a few cup fulls of that too. I have both Chaeto and a little bit of Calupera in there which does a great job at keeping my nitrates down. I find that grabbing some out and dropping it in my second tank gets a fair number of copepods and other creatures moved around.
