  1. could the temperature be causing this?

Just in case anyone is interested in an update, two water changes and several days of carbon later the tank is not 100% better, but the cynarina looks good and the star polyps are fully open. I think Im heading in the right direction. Thanks for everybodys help!! ND
  2. Bi-Color Blenny

I had one make a very concerted effort to kill a large, beautiful, and expensive cynarina. He was quite a wily little b@stard as well. Took me two weeks to catch him. I say thumbs down if you want corals, especially big fleshy LPSs.
  3. Animals that love hair algae?

Let me say that it is POSSIBLE, though you would never know it to read this board, to feed virtually nothing, use RO water, do water changes, skim sufficiently, blah blah blah and STILL have tons and tons and tons of hair algae. It is also POSSIBLE to have hermits that dont touch it, yellow...
  4. The Renaming of Blue Leg Hermits

Gosh, you need to give me those hermits! Mine I renamed Snail Mass Murderer No Algea Touchers. Then they went back to the LFS who, to my dismay, resold them under the name "blue-leg hermit". Pfft.
  5. Fish for 30 gallon??

Minh, is there a trick to sexing an individual, or do you need to see group behaviour?
  6. Fish for 30 gallon??

Youre right, Minh. I dont know this from personal experience anyway as I only have one, and have read they will breed in captivity which assumes there is necessarily more than one in a tank. However Bob Fenner, a fairly reputable source, says you need a tank 4 to 6 feet long to have two, which...
  7. Fish for 30 gallon??

Oops, now I see you want a breeder. Well, strike the gramma from the list! Unless its not the main fish, that is!
  8. Fish for 30 gallon??

Royal gramma! I have a 29g with a gramma going on his third year in my humble home. Grammas are completely harmless towards corals and usually get along fine with fish that dont look just like them (like dottybacks). Mine gets along fine with a six line wrasse, and a friend has one with a...
  9. could the temperature be causing this?

OK, heres what the plan is. Step 1: tank currently covered with a blanket, lights are off. This will be for 24 hours. Step 2: breakin' out the old Whisper carbon power filter from back in the fresh water days. Step 3: water change again Thursday Ill let you know what happens. My one last...
  10. could the temperature be causing this?

Good points, everybody. I really appreciate all the help everyone has given me so far! You guys are great! jmeader: I agree. What sort of skimmer would be good for a tiny (29g) sumpless tank, though? Small ones are all pretty much the same, and a big one (I have a Turboflotor HOB on my 75g)...
  11. could the temperature be causing this?

John F: The bioload isnt a problem I think. There are only two fish, a small gramma and a tiny tiny six-line wrasse. The PH on the CPR is new and pulling out lots of stuff. I feed, as I said, every other week. How could I possibly improve upon this as far as limiting nutrient import?
  12. could the temperature be causing this?

Thanks for the article, Mike. I dont think thats it. The brown stuff is definitely some kind of algae. As well there are lots of air bubbles attatched to the brown algae, which seems clearly to be respiration which means dinoflagellates or some algae or something. I cant see this being the...
  13. could the temperature be causing this?

Its a 29g with a CPR Bakpak skimmer. I use RO water and feed the tank about once every two weeks. While DOCs cant be tested for, would it not show up in some way in the nitrogen cycle?
  14. could the temperature be causing this?

Emmett, Gol durn, bwah, you aint from round here, are yuh?
  15. could the temperature be causing this?

Mike, high temp: maybe water flow: doubt it change of any sort other than temperature: none that I can think of If it is the temperature, why hasnt the other tank been affected?
  16. could the temperature be causing this?

By the way I was unable to find anything good about dinoflagellates. Can anyone tell be about it and specifically why it is detrimental (or more detrimental than, say, hair algae).
  17. could the temperature be causing this?

The temperature only goes down to 82 or so minimum. This means 3 or so degrees change -- not a significant drop I would think to cause the damage the tank had suffered the last couple of weeks. I did a water change today and added Reef Builder to raise my alkalinity. My big tank has a larger...
  18. could the temperature be causing this?

I wouldnt think oxygen is an issue what with a skimmer and a powerhead pointing up. But maybe the higher temperature is somehow causing the oxygen to leave solution. Should I stick another PH in there? Ill check to see what the low point is, but its pretty damn hot here even at night. I swear...
  19. could the temperature be causing this?

Im witnessing a slow decline in my 29g. In the last two weeks I have lost two cleaner shrimp which had been in the tank over a year, and the bubble coral and star polyps look terrible. The cynarina and lobophylia, while not bad, have seen better days. The sand and LR are slowly getting a...
  20. CPR Bakpak surface skimmer-- any good?

In my opinion: no. Heres why. The thing could EASILY have been desinged with the "tooth" pattern around the whole circumference like just about every overflow is (and lets face it, this is basically an overflow). But no, CPR had to make this silly thing with ONE side cut at an angle. This means...
