As I have stated in another thread, I do not like this place. I had a run in with the owner, who was a friend, and found out he was a crook. I'm not going to go deeper into it because it isn't necessary. I will just say that I swore I would never set foot in the store again.

Well, I had to move my tank the other day and I needed some supplies that stores like Petland just don't carry. So, I sent my secretary to the store to pick up the items and messenger them to my apartment (long story as to why I couldn't do this myself). She picked up the wrong item and I had to go there and exchange the goods. Fortunately, the owner wasn't there so I could get in and get out without incident. I got what I needed and checked out the tanks, because a junky can't resist.

They have a nice frag tank set up and while the acro frags are all brown, they all look very healthy. They are all fairly nice sized and I couldn't resist. The pricing on these frags was real good at $19.99 so I snagged a 3 branched acro that I immediately took home and put into the tank. The acro is actually green tipped with a reddish color and red/brown polyps that are very extended, making the frag look almost hairy.

Check out this thread of pics on nano-reef.com

I won't shop there again but I can say that if you want some acro frags, they do have nice ones at a good price. Everything else was real nice looking but very expensive.

The frags are a great addition, but they are indeed hit or miss. Sometimes they have nothing but large colonies ($80-150), and most of their SPS seem to be either the same color or a bit bleached from their 400w MHs. All in all, it is nice to have all the drygoods within Manhattan's limits.

It is a bit unfortunate that there is only one reef store in the area, as it makes it harder on the customers and leads to the one store getting fat and lazy and not responding to the market's needs. Maybe if the community is larger and more organized there will be room for another shop sometime soon. I don't understand why there should only be one.

That being said, I think that New World has responded to cost concerns recently as I have seen an easing of the prices on livestock.

Since I haven't been checking them out much (twice in the last year) I don't really know if they have been easing their prices back at all. I did see a 3 inch maxima that was blue with a green mantle that they had listed for $249. That seemed a bit high to me. They do have a nice store and they do have a decent selection but I have seen first hand attempts of their sales staff selling sick or dying corals. I have heard them say that certain fish are reef safe or that they are fine for a certain tank when in reality they weren't. The owner has tried to sell things to me in the past that I know were not right for my tanks. He has also tried to sell me corals that were clearly dying or sick. I managed to get him to discount the price on some of these as I thought I would try and rescue the coral from death. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This was a while ago and after he attempted to pull a scam on me I called it quits with the store.

If I could, I would open a store in Manhattan and put him out of business. Unfortunately, others have tried (Afishiando) and failed. Not sure why others can't make it.

The best fish store the city ever had was on 2nd avenue right by the 59th st bridge (sadly, I now live a couple of blocks from there and would have loved having that store so close to home). The store closed when someone decided to throw a brick through their window, which was a massive reef.

Sad that someone did that, ruined it for all the reefers.

I agree with you about the selling of fish that are not reef safe. I was once sold a bicolor blenny by them after they insisted that he was fine for my tank. The damn thing ate about $150 worht of pocillopora before I could catch him. I know that this particular species CAN be reef safe, but from what I have heard, everyone seems to know that they rarely are.

I don't even look at their clams as they are always overpriced. They do have a sick/dying section in the back by the fish now. I think it is $19.99 for any piece. I really enjoy grabbing pieces like that and fragging them or getting them to grow in my tank.

Take a day trip on Saturday into Jersey. We've got Absolutely fish and reef encounter north of newark. I've heard there a few nice ones south of newark too. There one in Lodi my buddy is checking out. I'll give a full report when I see it. He says they've got Flame Angelfish for 24 bucks and Yellow Tangs for 14. Not sure if they have corals but I'll definately stop by and check it out.

I know Jersey is the most disgusting hellpit on earth but they've got a few decent fish stores LOL

Kleyton at NWA is also a stand up guy. Not sure how often he is in the store but he does a lot of their tank maintenance and isn't going to push something that doesn't belong in your tank.

$259 for a small clam is a crime. I was told that NWA has a very low survival rate on their clam shipments. Rather than gouge the crap out of the customer, they should stop selling clams.

Personally, I don't think stores should sell anything that has little chance of survival out of the ocean. Yes, some people have success in keeping certain livestock but the exception to the rule shouldn't mean that stores can order, stock and sell things that should be left at sea.

$250 for a clam is absurd. If you're looking for clams and don't want to have them shipped, the place across from Rainbow Aquariums in Wayne, NJ had blue maximas in the $40-$75 range last time I stopped in. Look in the LFS thread for the address. Hell, I'll pick one up and hand deliver it to your door if you give me the $200 savings
