I picked up a frag of this in an exchange over the weekend. Right now, it's being labelled as an echinata, but these corallites are really short and thick.

What do you guys think? It's also considered a super slow grower. Slower, than the Purple Monster :?

Echinatas aren't that slow of a grower, but maybe this particular piece is the odd one out. Sorry Karl, I can't ID it like this. As the old line goes, "send it to me and I'll do my best to ID it for you" :D

Another piece of it will be auctioned off at the BACFM. Hopefully, you'll be able to get a closer look there :D

Kinda looks like A gomezi to me.

Hey Matt! Glad to have you aboard RDO!

I can see some similarities. This one has very tubular corallites. A lot thicker and random than the gomezi I had. I guess it grows so slow, that Steve can only offer it every 4 months 8O :?

Hey Karl,

I'm pretty sure it's a bali echinata. How long have you had yours and is it retaining it's stubby corallite structure? I picked up a piece through James when he had aquascene that Jesus had brought in. It's definitely a slow grow...just like my other bali echinata's. In my tank it doesn't retain it's short stubby coralite structure like it had when i first purchased it. I nearly lost it during a careless low alk incident and i just moved it back over into the main display.

Here's some pics from when i first picked it up:

Hi Rich,

Good to see you posting in RDO!

I've only had mine for a few days, but that's pretty much how Jesus' looked when I got it. I'm still acclimating it to the lights. I love the thin branches of echinata and have been wanting one for so long. It's kinda funny that I ended up with this stubby kind.

Glad yours made it.

Are you heading up to the BACFM? I'd like to see how well this does in the auction.

Karl

Yes, i plan on being there...relentlessly on the prowl.

btw, about Jesus' echinata...i also have Tyree's blue scepter and they pretty much look structurally identical.

Can't wait to see you there, Rich.

BTW, what's your opinion on the best placement for my echinata?

Thanks!

Karl

lol Gresham...you may need more than 10 minutes. Your certainly welcome to come on by if your ever in the area.

Karl...do you have any sweet spots left in your tank still that's about mid-level with good random flow? It seems to be able to adapt even when place high in the water column.
