Next theory?

When will I listen and stop messing around with this rock and start the whole thing over from scratch? I think that's the only thing that will work at this point.

I'm all out of theories. Except, maybe your not staring at your tank enough. I stare at mine all the time. I'm not sure if its the secret to success though. :)
Lets review, You have a great lighting set up, A kalk reactor, a calcium reactor, a Ranco controller for stable temps, a tunze and OM for random flow, I forget your brand of skimmer, a good amount of LR and a bare bottom tank. YOu recently metioned that you were bringing your Mg. up. I would doubt that this is the one key to your pale colors. You have tried heavier feeding, added fish, etc., etc. There should be no reason for anything less than a nice colorful healthy tank.

I have a local friend that has near the same set up as you and I. He has a bare bottom tank as you do. He has always commented on how colorful my tank is. I was there the other day and was shocked at how pale all of his colors are. His green slimer is yellow, an emerald green acro frag he gave me is still emerald green in my tank and has turned light pastel green in his. He has red bugs on a couple colonies. I blame his coloration in part, on that. He has always had paler colors though. I mentioned this to the guy at the LFS who set this tank up. His thought was trace elements. I forget the exact two he mentioned. YOu have mentioned that you dont have red bugs and I doubt they would be affecting your whole tank if you did.

In short, Your corals are pale. Not bleaching. You mentioned a couple of your frags are growing. That to me is a sign that you have something close to the happy medium that will give you the tank you desire. I dont think that pale corals is a reason to give up. After I had my snow storm and did a 50% WC in 12 hours I did notice a big change in colors of my corals for the better. I think that your idea of increasing WC is a good idea. Try that for a while, see if it helps, if not stick with that and change something else in the routine too. You have a great list of equipment. It must be something in the weekly routine.

I was doing 10G WC's every 2 weeks. The corals that are fading eventually turn white and die. I have lost 2 more corals in the past 2 weeks. So the pale corals and no polyp extension are telling me the corals are suffering a slow death. The bali slimer is growing but yellow and not green anf the pink stylo is now fading after growth. I got a red/pink montipora cap for 2 years that has grown maybe 1 CM. Those things are weeds.

The algae growing on the return pipes is telling me I have a phosphate problem.

I clean the skimmer cup twice a week as well. I dont know what else there is to do with the tank? I really dont know anymore. Hundreds of dollars wasted on dieing corals is not fun.

I couldnt imagine being in those shoes. Spending hundreds on dieing corals really must suck. Studies have shown fish tanks reduce stress. Yours is not the case. Ive been there with agressive FW. This is supposed to be a fun and enjoyable hobby. If you truely have tried everything and are a wits end then breaking the tank down and taking a breather and possibly taking up golf instead would be the thing you need to do to be satisfied. Your tank obviously isnt doing it for you. I know you've been ready to get out for some time and we keep telling you to hang on. You have to make that ultimate decision.

Looking at new LR from reefermadness. Would 45lbs of FIJI be enough spread on a 58G? More?

Also I am thinking of this plan -

- Take water and some of the rock from the 58G tank and fill the 15G tank/
- Remove all the corals and fish and place in the 15G with a heater and a small power head. I don't have a good light . Maybe a 55W PC.
- Empty the rest of the 58G and clean the tank with clean water and chuck in the garbage all the remaining rock.
- Place new LR overnighted from supplier in to the 58G tank and stack
- Fill tank with new SW.
- 3 days later move all corals and fish to tank.

Will this work? I am afraid the scops tang will not like it in the 15G.
No auto top off on the 15G so salinity will swing.

Any ideas?
