I've never seen a hybrid, would love to.. The growth pattern would be a dead giveaway..

I think the key words here is " evidence for interspecific hybridization"...
but the conclusion is foggy as usual with those potheads:
"The results presented here imply that a number of rare Indo-Pacific Acropora species are the products of recent hybridization events, and highlight the significance of hybridization in coral diversification. Whether these species have hybrid origins or have evolved and then hybridized in the absence of conspecific gametes remains to be elucidated"

It's not unexpected. A lot of hybridization goes on with corals -- indeed, with a lot of closely-related critters of any stripe.

...I wonder if this could be a good thing for the trade, in that hybrids generally wouldn't qualify for protection under CITES and such, as I understand it.
