i have been wanting to dose my tank with esv cazlcium for more than a month now but i can because my calcium is already 500+, people have told me its the salt and i didn't believe it, and now i do. i tested a bucket of ro water i just made and i added the oceanic salt and set a level of .1023. Then i tested the water, and gues what??? The calcium was at close to 600. what salt would you recomend that will allow to dose my esv calcium and get my coraline algae growing faster. please help me with this problem. i have a lot of corals in my tanks now lots of sps, which coral suck down a lot of calcium, what can i get that eats calcium rapidly. i already have a clam maybe i should get more of them, i only got one for a test run, and its doing amazing, i will buy ten if i have to.

thanks

Oceanic salt has always been known to be high in CA. I dont think you changing salt and dosing ESV is going to make a huge difference in coraline since the ESV is going to make up for the low calcium in the salt you switch to. Granted 500-600 is a bit much but the thing now is to make sure you have a balanced alk. Coraline will surely follow if you keep these params in check

personally I went from oceanic to IO.. The only reason is the fact that and im sure you will find each bucket of oceanic is different. And the stories of how oceanic causes algae outbreaks in tanks. Many here like tropic marin as well. We had a poll a while back but it really boils down to what works for you.

I have been using Oceanic for over two years now. I have the same question Deano had. Why do you feel you need to dose Ca? If your Ca levels are high enough (like mine) and you find that you might be out of balance with Alk, then just get some Kent Superbuffer or add Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda) to raise your Alk.

By changing salt all you're doing is adding Ca by different means. If your salt already contains it, you're one step ahead. There are lots of people who will argue about Oceanic and various salt being better, and everyone is entitled to their opinions. There have been documented batches of IO that have been bad too. And IO is supposed to be the #1 selling salt.

Bottom line is, you've got to do what works for you.
