hey Vio with all due respect as well, Salt never made or broke a reefer.
if you haven't noticed most of the high-end acros growers use instant ocean (example jason fox, WWC), every reefer reef's differently. but Salt is not gonna make a reefer, its the dosing of Cal, Alk and mag that makes the difference.
i switched over to aquaforest dosing but kept my same salt cause honestly salt is just salt.
im not sure what salt Vincent uses but im sure it wasnt the salt that cause the alk swing. Actually Instant ocean is preferred by them because the levels are always consistent in the mix not to mention half the price.

Not sure if we are in same page ?! I refer to SPS , NOT zooas , did you ever check Potassium on instant ocean ? Jason Fox , is NOT using instant ocean , is dif. one. And YES i know what salt Vincent use , do you ?!

"im not sure what salt Vincent uses but im sure it wasnt the salt that cause the alk swing"

If never do water change and one day decide to do it , may cause problems. If you change Alk. from 8 dKH to 13 dKH in few min. YES , problem show up.

"if you haven't noticed most of the high-end acros growers "
That the confusion , most are just transit , they do NOT grow a frag (1/2") to 14" then sale it. Is IN and OUT = make $ lol.

How much did it swing?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

My alk is always 8-8.6 steady for one year without water change and two months ago I decided to do 5 gal water change every 5 days and do some changes in the tank like adding some new rocks and put new filter sponge. I think with all those changes happen in the tank so quick affect water quality and all parameters, that?s why Sps reacted so bad to this changes and some of them stn and died. My mistake!

As with lighting, there also was not a consensus in terms in terms of which salt to use. World Wide, Jason Fox and Sanjay all used Instant Ocean and had for quite some time. Jeff is using the other Instant Ocean product Reef Crystals. They said they mainly used it due to its consistency batch to batch and the success they had had with it over time. Julian was using his salt as was Stuart with his H2O Ocean Plus salt. Cruz and Julian use Tropic Marin Bio Activ, but have only switched to it in the last 6 months and were quite pleased with the results. But I forgot to ask Brad which salt he used. So while they all use different brands of salt, they all do agree on doing water changes, but by different amounts and frequencies. Jeff does the most frequent changes by doing a 15-gallon water change daily on his tank. This is significantly more than is changed by Cruz and Julian who change 15 gallons every 2 weeks. Brad changes 27 gallons weekly as that is the size of his reservoir for new saltwater. Jason obviously has a much bigger reservoir as he changes over 200 gallons in his 700-gallon tank every two weeks. Stuart does a 20% water change every 2-3 weeks, while the tank at WorldWide has a 10% change every week. Julian and Sanjay also do 10% water changes, but Sanjay does one approximately twice per month while Julian only performs this task once a month. When discussing the rate and volume of water changes and how they came to the numbers they did almost everyone said that over time they found that these water changes produced the best results in their tank and that only if they saw problems did they increase the size/frequency of doing changes. They also all said that if they had a major issue they had no problem changing 50% of their tank?s water or more until things improved. :Starwars:

The main point is this:

Before make the water change , check Alk. for the new one , must be close to your tank , Red Sea Pro is a way up in ALk. then 8 dKH have 12dKH.
For small tanks make a dif. NOT to mention if salt is old , i got that problem years ago.

Sorry to hear man. Curious why you decided to do 5 gallon water change every 5 days.

When I bought this big Tonga rock for my new scape I was like no patience to add directly into my system because I know it?s live rock. Then after a week all my sps turned black or dark brown totally lost their color and that?s the time i decided to do water change, in my mind it?s the ammonia spike and also one wrasse dies after. Yea I didn?t do water changes and do rock work.
