Hi folks, I wanted to share my info and views of my 56 gallon semi-cube tank. It is an SPS dominated tank that was designed to test out a surgemaker that I had built.

Dimensions 30" x 24" x 18", Glass

The tank is an interesting one to say the least. By going with the flow, it may help you understand the surgemaker and algae scrubber somewhat. I had two holes for 1" bulkheads cut in the back corner and I made an internal glass overflow for skimming. Water then enters a homemade surgemaker, roughly based on a Carlson surge devise. The surge produces a substantial flow of water for 5-6 seconds then is dormant for 10 seconds or so while the surge bucket is filled. The recipient of this ~0.5 gallon of water is the algae scrubber. Homemade again, this is roughly 2' long and 1' wide giving me substantial surface area for algal growth. Flow from here flows onto a sponge in my sump. No skimmer here although I have run one in the past. Just don't need it! Rio 2100 pumps back up to the tank.

Life in the tank grows on rock from fiji, my LFS, and my backyard aragocrete. I have 1" or so of aragonite on the bottom. Corals are mostly SPS but there are some soft corals, zooanthids, etc. Many sponges thrive and some cool algaes.
